Murder E.P.D. Case Number 98-2389

During the early morning hours of November 16th, 1998, Elizabethtown Police and Fire Departments responded to a vehicle fire just off Nicholas Street in Elizabethtown. After the fire was extinguished, police discovered the bodies of Jason L. Walker, 24 years of age, of Elizabethtown, and Joshua R West, 23 years of age, of Elizabethtown. Both victims had been shot and placed inside the burnt vehicle. This is now a cold case and, after many investigative hours, we are asking for the public’s assistance in this case.

Murder E.P.D. Case Number 87-151

On February 21, 1987, Elizabethtown Police were called to investigate the disappearance of the night clerk employed at The Super 8 Motel, located at 2018 North Mulberry St.

Shortly after police arrived at the scene, they discovered a body behind the motel. The victim, Vicki Heath, was found dead from a gunshot wound.

This case remained a cold case until the recent technology of DNA evidence linked this crime with three other similar crimes. The case was aired on America’s Most Wanted.

A Killer Lurks Along I-65 in the Midwest

The Merrillville and Remington Indiana Police Departments received calls the morning of March 3, 1989, detailing shockingly similar crimes. Two female employees working the early morning shift at separate hotels were robbed, raped and shot by a small .22-caliber weapon. Police immediately suspected the crimes were connected, and they were right: Ballistics tests and DNA proved that the same perpetrator was responsible for both crimes.

Police pieced together all clues and followed up on all leads, but ultimately, two families were left grieving for lost loved ones with little closure. That is, until 1990, when a Columbus, Indiana sexual assault struck a nerve with local investigators – another woman working the night shift at a hotel off of Interstate 65 had been attacked. This time, the assailant used a knife instead of a small gun, and the victim was able to run away. The victim not only survived but assisted with a detailed composite sketch of the perpetrator. Later, all three cases were linked by DNA, and the sketch was released in hopes that someone would put a name to the face.

Now that police had a face to link with these horrific crimes, they actively pursued their alleged suspect: a white male in his 40’s, 6 feet tall with bright green eyes — the right one, lazy. His hair was stringy and salt and pepper colored.

Four Crimes Now Linked To Interstate 65 Serial Killer

Despite the coordinated work of three local departments and the Indiana State Police, the trail went cold and remained so for more than 20 years until police from Elizabethtown, Ky., entered DNA from one of their nagging cold cases into the national combined DNA index database (CODIS). The crime was the 1987 murder of Vicki Heath, an overnight shift worker at a motel off of Interstate 65. What once seemed like an isolated incident now perfectly fit into the M.O. of a broadening range of serial murders.

Police fear there may be more cases yet to be connected to this suspect. Detectives are exploring the possibility that they are looking for a truck driver or traveling salesman who would have been traveling the I-65 corridor in the late 1980s or early 1990s. He would now be somewhere between the age of 55 and 65. If you have any tips that can identify this traveling killer, or may connect a similar crime, call 1-800-597-8123 right away. You can remain anonymous.

He was last seen wearing a dark blue pair of “Dickies” type pants, gray t-shirt with a blue emblem, and a white pair of shoes.
